Wolf Caves just opened a it’s hardest RED trail yet! Get ready to rock and roll on “Eamon’s Wrecking Field” measuring about 1 mile long. Eamons’ Wrecking Field starts at the very end of Whiskey Warrior and keeps the excitement going all the way to the head of T-Rex. Consider Whiskey Warrior the warm-up for Eamon’s Wrecking Field which passes near some of Wolf Caves best Purple Trails and it is a very scenic and exciting ride all the way from beginning to end. It has not been marked in reverse so just pick it up at the end of Whiskey Warrior and start from the north and run it towards the south. The trail has been painted with red arrows and red flags all of the way. On the OnX Offroad app it should show up as a black dashed line. This what we will call a “hard” Red trail. If the trail gets to be more than you can handle you can find bypasses all along the way.
Wolf Caves longest trail, we call it Lone Star!
Lone Star gracefully winds for 12 miles through one of the most unique rock formations to be found. As you travel Lone Star you will pass by some of the most hard-core rock crawling obstacles in the country. You can run Lone Star from either direction, start your journey at the south gate to jump straight into rock crawling paradise, or enter Lone Star from the north gate to start off with a gentle drive into this scenic wonderland. We have paper maps but trust me, you will need some extra help to navigate Lone Star. Lone Star minimum vehicle recommendations: 4x4, 35” tires, 4” lift, rock sliders, winch, and as much armor underneath as you can stand. Y’all come on out and give Lone Star a run if you have what it takes!
If Lone Star is a little too much for you and your build then check out Sandstone. Sandstone encompasses the Wolf Caves Main Trail along with many other trails all rolled together and stretches over 16 miles. Sandstone can be run from either direction, so this gives you a grand total of more than 32 miles of our easiest wheeling! Sandstone is not recommended for most stock vehicles, but it will get you all over Wolf Caves on the easiest route. We hope to see you out on the trails soon!

Wolf Caves - Red and Purple Trail Descriptions
1-Twister – Red - Easy and first trail you get to and located on the west side of Finley’s Playground. Start off going up the chute, bear hard left for hardest action. Then turn hard left and go north and then turn back hard right as you drop into the narrow chute, then back left again and over a large boulder, known for flipping rigs over, before landing back on the flat land. Make a hard right-hand turn and split the crack over a couple of 8 foot boulders while dropping back down into a deep chasm. Either go straight and climb the 10-foot wall or make a hard left and climb the 10-foot wall on the east end of the chasm. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
1-Squeeze Chute – Red - Go ahead and run this one to find out how a lemon feels in a lemonade factory! This one can be run from either direction. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
2-Bonfire – Red/Purple - There are several ways to run this trail. Follow the path on your onX Offroad App. to ensure you stay on the purple course. Along the way you will drive up and split the crack over a couple of boulders and drop off into a hole that will prove to be very difficult to get out. Then hard left and follow the path. Wolf Caves designated red/purple trail.
2-Left Turn – Red - As you enter you will be required to make a hard left turn while trying to climb a very challenging wall of granite. Many are denied right here at the start, so don’t feel too bad if you don’t make it. There is a go-around to catch up with your buddies who successfully make the climb. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
3-Whiskey Tango Foxtrot - Red - Is a longer trail with the beginning and the end the most challenging parts. The first big challenge is a 12-foot rock on the right and a 7 footer on the left with a gap in the middle. You must drive super high on the right and let the left front tire float until you get past center of gravity. Once you get past center of gravity your rig will fall on the slider and it takes some creative moves to get enough traction to move forward. From there it is has a lot of smaller challenges until the last part where there will be boulders and cracks with a hard left turn. Once you are at the top the easy way out will be to cross over the crack to the right, but there are two optional lines if you go to the end of the crack. There will be a drop off on the left and another on the right. The right is the more aggressive with an off camber steep drop while balancing the right tires on a rock and splitting a crack. At the bottom you will have to avoid diffing out on the rocks. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
4-Short Cut – Red - Starts from near Black Nemesis with a difficult climb up and then winds around with various intermittent challenging obstacles and finally ends near the Texas flag at Flag Hill. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
5-Black Nemesis – Red - There are three lines up this one so you can name your poison! Most people go with #1 on the far left, but the choice is yours and each one will provide that special kind of thrill. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
5-Black Out – Purple - Depending on the time of day and cloud cover you basically climb on top of a big boulder then drop between to huge monolith granite boulders and into a black hole never to be seen again. Maybe the “never to be seen again” part is about as likely as finding bigfoot, but anything is possiable….right? Well it is certain you will drop into a black hole, then using a variety of technical maneuvers you will eventually reach the end of the trail and enter back into the sunlight of the world. Wolf Caves designated purple trail.
6-Sidewinder – Red - A favorite trail here at Wolf Caves. This trail snakes back and forth and up and down thru a montage of granite obstacles and challenges. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
7->>>>Closed until further notice<<<xxxxxx DO NOT ENTER - Texas Two-Step – Red - Be careful, by the time you finish this trail you may never want to go dancing in Texas again! This one starts from the Wolf Caves Main trail and two-steps its way thru a boulder field directly west up the fence line and ends at Flag Hill. This trail can be run from either direction. Wolf Caves designated red trail.>>>>Closed until further notice<<<xxxxxx
8-Flag Hill – Red - Is a very popular climb that will test the nerve of everyone that runs it for first time. It is a steep climb off camber with a ledge near the top that will push you closer to the edge as you climb and all the while you’re looking at that drop off and thinking if those tires don’t grip, this will get ugly quick. Once up you will work your way around and down the back side. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
8-Caution Flag – Purple - Begins near Flag Hill, is a purple trail with an off-camber 8 foot drop-off. Your front passenger tire must drop in and cross over to the rock below, being able to see that tire is a must or have a spotter. At that same time the driver’s tires have to drop off of an 8 foot vertical wall. Once you are down you will veer left then go about 100 feet to the next obstacle. This is a group of rocks 8-10 feet high. You will have to split the crack and work through to the top. Once the front tires break over the top it is a uneven vertical drop off, and your still splitting that crack and also there’s a diff rock at the bottom you will have to miss. It can be difficult to keep from falling in the crack before the rear tires get enough bite to keep your cage off the rock. Once down the trail becomes red as it crosses the Main road and will end near Black Nemesis. Wolf Caves designated purple trail.
9-T-Rex – Red - Another favorite, from the Trail Head look up on the hill to see the caricature of a T-Rex the route starts due east right down the middle of the creek from the main road. You will travel practically straight up the hill and about halfway up another trail named Kings Way will branch off to the right. When you reach the top you will be on top of T-Rex Hill. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
9-T-Rex 2 – Red -Branches off to your left about halfway up T-Rex. The trail will circle back to the top of T-Rex Hill and is a little less intense that T-Rex. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
9-T-Rex 3 – Red - Starts out of the creek and heads south up the side of T-Rex Hill until it joins into T-Rex 2 where it goes on up to the top of T-Rex Hill. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
9-Kings Way – Red - This trail starts about halfway up T-Rex 1 and branches off to the right or SE. From there you will navigate some large boulders leading up to an off camber 9-foot wall that has a reputation for flipping vehicles over. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
9-Carnivore – Purple - Is a steep climb that splits two cracks at the same time and, when ran correctly, you must make a right turn and split yet another crack before you get across the first two. The left tire must run a narrow ridge and then make a hard left to make the final drop to get out. Wolf Caves designated purple trail.
10-IQ Test – Red - Is a proving ground to find out how smart you really are. If you are smart you will pass this one on by and search for something easier to do. As you enter the testing chamber you will have two trail options on your left, and neither of them are very good. Making it up the first route scores you an IQ of zero, and making it up the second route scores you an IQ of one. Either route will leave you wondering if you even have an IQ! Wolf Caves designated red trail.
14-School Boy - Red - Is located right beside IQ Test. This is one of the easier red trails and is a good one to warm your tires up on. It can be run in either direction. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
14-Dream On - Red - Is located on the east side of Finley’s Playground. The trail takes on the hill at a 45-degree angle but is not that difficult until the last big ledge up at the top. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
14-Sweet Dreams – Red - Is the next trail to the south of Dream On. It has two ways to start, the easiest being a straight shot up. The hardest way starts on flat ground and climbs straight up and then navigating across a massive boulder field. Then you will be approaching the finial climb up a large crack and it’s almost necessary at that point to have rear steer in order to make the 90 degree turn before the final climb. The final climb splits a large crack in the granite wall although there is an easier bypass to the right that many people choose to take. If you take the hardest route it is a fairly good challenge for most rigs. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
15-Ram Skull – Red - Is located right beside and just south of Sweet Dreams. This one is just a warmup for what is next in the line, a trail named Tree Hugger. Ram Skull has an easier line that you can run on the left side, but if you decide to take it head-on down the middle it just might rock your world! When you make it up you will be downtown Finley’s Playground. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
15-Tree Hugger – Red - Is the next and final trail along the east wall of Finley’s Playground. Don’t let the name fool you, the trail is one bad S.O.B. Just like some bulls that very few men every get to complete an 8 second ride on, Tree Hugger is that caliber of a trail. There is no soft spot, no easy way with Tree Hugger. If you make it up this one unassisted you will be in a special class because there are not many men or machines that have completed the entire trail unassisted by a winch cable. There is a ledge or two on the front side so it is possiable to make the 15 foot climb straight up a wall of granite, and just as you reach the top you will need to be making a 45 degree turn to the left and split a 10 foot deep crack for another 30 feet to the exit on top of Finley’s Playground. Most people pass this one on by especially if they have already tried it once. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
17-U-Turn – Red - Just past the entrance stay towards the right to test your drop-off skills. You will get plenty of flex’in on this one, and another the nice drop-off at the end, then just make a u-turn and run it back the other direction. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
18-Money Pit - Red - Heads off towards the north and then makes a 90 degree turn and drops into the Money Pit. Go thru the pit and climb on out on the other side. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
18-Sledgehammer – Red - Starts off with a few hammer time ledges to climb up. Keep right and go for the highest point over the hill. The bypass veers left and does not go over the very top. Trail ends on the back side and joins many connected trails. Can be run from either direction. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
19-Railroad Blues – Red - Will have you singing the blues before you reach the end. Starts off from the very beginning with a vertical wall climb, stay left for the biggest challenge. Then on up and over boulders until you reach the “railroad” formation for which the trail gets its name. Make a hard 120-degree left hand turn and get up and on the “railroad tracks”, a set of raised granite rocks with some space in between them. Soon you will drop off the tracks and will come upon a serious drop off of a rock ledge into a hole, stay straight ahead and climb up the to the top of the next wall while making a hard right then follow all the way along the top of the triangle shaped wall, there will be a 15 foot cliff straight down just out of your driver’s window, so be sure to pay attention to details here. Keep circling around towards the right and soon you will reach another wall to climb up and immediately turn sharp right and follow the ledge on towards the northwest until you reach your final big drop off the granite back down into the valley. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
20-Living On The Edge – Red - Sometimes situations happen to people and their whole life might just pass by for a life review. As you leave the creek bottom below you will climb up a wall of granite that gets steeper the higher you go. Some people bear too far to the left and drive on up the channel and then claim they ran Living On The Edge. Boy are they dismayed when they find out that they only ran the bypass!! To run the trail you have to make a gut wrenching right turn about ¾’s of the way up. It’s that point in the trail where some people have had their whole life pass right in front of their eyes. There’s something about teetering on a hill, making that right turn while in a vertical position, and all the while entertaining a 25 foot drop off just out your passenger door that causes those type of things to happen. Once you crest the top of the hill you might be a changed person. Proceed on towards the right and work your way up and over the next granite hill then follow the trail on towards the northwest and it will gradually lead you back down to the creek bed below and exits near Cake Walk. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
21-Terminator – Red - Is just a friendly giant. Compared to some of the other trails at Wolf Caves this one is relatively tame. Starting near the creek and winding around and up to a long wall of granite rock. Climb the wall wherever you want, and you will tie into the tame side of Living On The Edge. You can follow it northwest back to the creek below. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
22-Cake Walk - Red - Starts off in a peaceful valley but as you head straight up the hill towards the north things can go sour fast. This massive wall of granite rises up and can accommodate all kinds of rigs and drivers. It’s your choice…. once you reach 3/4th of the way up veer hard right for the easiest path to the top. Most rigs choose to veer slightly left for a strong climb that makes you tingle in all the right places. If you choose to be a bad ass, then just shoot for slightly right of center and we will get our cameras ready for that 1 million views video shot that just might happen. Stand clear below! Wolf Caves designated red trail.
33-Big Bad Wolf – Purple - Is a steep, tall climb that will peak out at about 30 feet high. The bottom has a ledge that will probably require a bump to get up enough to start your climb. From there you must split a crack, work your way to top and find enough traction to put you over the top. Once you break over it will drop off the other side. Exit either left or right side. Wolf Caves designated purple trail.
33-Dances With Wolves – Purple - Starts with an almost vertical 8’ wall on the left side. The right side has some taper to it. Getting the rear in just the right spot is critical, once you’re there the front will be light, but with the right line, will go right up. Wolf Caves designated purple trail.
34-Coyote Run – Red - Is another favorite at Wolf Caves and it all starts with a climb from the creek up and over a cluster large boulders. Keep going to a small wall, climb up and veer left as you head up over off-camber walls of granite to the top. Near the top you will make a hard right turn around a huge granite bolder and shoot straight ahead down a boulder filled alley. At the bottom cross another trail and keep going straight until you come up against another wall of granite, then veer left and climb the boulder field, at the top make a 120 degree hard right turn, dropping down to the flat plain below. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
35-Psycho Ward - Red - Is pretty much an up and down spot, you can veer to the left, or veer to the right. On the left side there is an easy up and a steep way. Most people will take the steep way up and at the first ledge veer right to an easy climb out. A more aggressive way is to take your drivers tire over the peak on the left until you come out the top. Once up, you go straight across the top and drop off the back side. From there, if you stay left, you will come to two other trails, or at the top you can turn right and be right back near the starting point. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
35-Psycho Ward 2 – Red - Leads you up and into an upward valley of rocks, boulders, and ledges. Just keep rolling, there are lots of options at the top. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
36-Psycho-Path – Red - Is one of the favorite trails here. It starts by gently veering to the right while navigating a 45 degree slanted off camber climb to the top, then veers left and slightly downhill for about 100 feet where you will make a hard right turn that has a few optional lines. Most rigs split the crack and cross over to the right mid-way. At the end of the crack you will drop in where there is a nice climb straight up a 12-foot wall that will kick your butt if you don’t find that sweet spot. Horsepower could find you on your lid. If you are denied, you can turn left to get out. The trail continues up to the top of T-Rex Hill. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
36-Psycho-Path 2 – Purple - Starts off to the SE up and over a field of huge boulders, be careful here or you will end up on your lid. After climbing up on the side of a wall of granite you will make a 90 degree left turn and will be looking almost straight north and down a wall of granite, ….ok it’s gut-check time…., take the plunge and try not to perform the famous end over end maneuver. As you arrive back at the bottom proceed straight ahead into the narrow upward chute where your passenger side tires skillfully cling to the vertical wall of granite and the driver’s tires navigate from boulder to boulder. As you reach the top, drive first hard left and then back right in a fishhook pattern and then proceed to the exit. Wolf Caves designated purple trail.
36-Shock Therapy – Purple - Short but very technical 75% of the time. It starts and follows Psycho-Path 2 for the first 50 feet then takes about a 110 degree right turn, very off camber and drops off fast. There is a bypass if needed. Once past that you have some smaller stuff, bridging a few boulders and work your way up and over to a section that drops into a crack. The walls on both sides are very uneven, just getting the rig on the wall to move forward is a challenge. That’s when every tire will require a near perfect placement. As you advance, the front and rear, left and right will almost always be one up and one down at the same time. You will only have inches for each tire on the edge at all times. At the end of the crack you will drop off to exit. It is an uneven 8 foot drop with a rock in the bottom. Narrow rigs beware! Wolf Caves designated purple trail.
39-The Wall – Red - Lives up to it’s name, what more can you say? Have it your way: far left = Top Gun, down the middle = Lear Jet, Piper Cubs please stay to the right. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
40-Emu – Red - Will take you up, down, and around. Practice your driving skills and check your flex on this one. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
41-Go-Go Mulezilla – Red - This trail has 3 Trail Heads. One starting point is at the top of T-Rex Hill looking due east, a second one is further towards the east looking back west, and the third starting point is from the south side looking northward. This trail has a lot to offer from off-camber, to providing a gut-wrenching drop-off. You will figure it out when you get there, the onX Offroad app does a great job of highlighting the Trail Heads as well as the trail itself. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
42-Gatekeeper – Red - This one will accommodate all builds and skill levels. Just make your approach further around in a counterclockwise fashion to increase the difficultly level. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
43-Sky Rider – Red - This one provides a scenic view and a few challenges. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
48-Mohawk – Red - The big challenge is to get thru the rocks guarding the entry. If you make it past the entry just keep following the trail on up and towards the west. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
51-Purple Haze – Purple - Is one of the favorites for the rear steer rigs. Starting from the creek bed you go up and cross over a crack and make a steep off camber right turn. It is very technical and if you miss the line it can get serious fast. Once across that, you work your way first right and then back left. You will come to a spot where you will have to go up on a wall with both of your right-side tires. Near the end of this wall make a hard left and you will see an optional challenge that climbs and splits two big boulders, making the trail become extremely difficult - most people will bypass this area and will continue going straight from the wall, then veering left and working on up through the boulder field towards the top, just after crossing another trail you will find a hard right turn that’s off camber, then a hard left turn that starts a climb and splits a crack. Once up, the trail turns further left and leads to an eight-foot boulder on the right and a smaller boulder on the left. You split the rocks and climb up to the boulder to the top. Go on a short distance before dropping off the left end of the boulder to finish. Wolf Caves designated purple trail.
54-Smashing Pumpkin – Red - Starts when you cross the creek, at your first opportunity to turn left keep going straight and go all of the way to the fence line then you will make a turn towards the right and circle around to your first obstacle, then have a straight shot at the big climb up the hill. This trail can be run from either direction. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
54-Rolling Boulders – Red - If you like boulders this is your trail. Start in the creek and head up over the wall, keep going to the little outcropping area for a little flexing. As you finish, just head back down to the creek on one of the unnamed trails and you will be at the Trail Head of Smashing Pumpkin. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
64-Split Tail – Red - Test your flex on this one. The further to the right and the more difficult it gets. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
67-Buckshot – Red - Head west up and to the top of a small granite hill. Make a hard left turn, then back hard right. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
68-Death Valley – Red - Located on the SE side of Goat Head. Entering from the SE side, climb up and over the waves of granite protecting the entry. Once inside veer right for an exciting climb to the top of Goat Head. OR veer left for a peaceful ride down the valley to Rat Trap. If you are already at the top of Goat Head look for the sign “Death Valley”, where your adventure down begins just to the right of the sign. You will be able to test your tolerance for driving off large granite cliffs straight down. Gravity will see to it that you do reach the bottom….one way or the other. Have fun! Wolf Caves designated red trail.
68A-Rat Trap -Red - Is a technical climb where you have to sidewall up an 8 foot wall with one tire until you near the top and bridge the gap to another rock than straddles a gap just right for the width of the tires. When you have all tires up, follow the crack to the end and you exit. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
69-Majesty – Purple - Usually we wait until a trail has been run before we give it a name, but it this case we have put the cart before the horse. The entrance to this trail has been invincible, but one day it will be conquered and once your past the entrance the rest of the way will be easy. At the entrance you are squeezed by a steep wall on one side and on the other side by the vertical side of a huge boulder. Once past this area the trail turns west and passes huge boulders on the driver’s side, then hard left and up on over a large wave of granite and on up veering right it ends in the exact same spot that Heaven’s Gate ends. Wolf Caves designated purple trail.
71-Heaven’s Gate - Purple - Is the Holy Grail of climbs. It is very intimidating. It is a wide crack with step start then constantly uneven from side to side with ledges that put one tire climbing and the other one trying to wash out and go into the crack. The crack is extremely wide, you can barely keep from falling. Once you peak out on the top, it is a steep drop off and it turns right at the same time and the crack is so wide you will have to drop a tire in just briefly and bring back out. Oh, and there is that boulder at the peak of the climb that moves when you put your tires on it. Wolf Caves designated purple trail.
72-Sunday Drive/Gary's Way – Red - Starts off with an intense hill climb, then taper off winding back and forth, don’t cut across the trail here just keep winding back and forth. There is an bypass out towards the left but forget about it and turn right towards Gary’s Way where you will have some maneuvering to do thru a narrow opening leading down to the exit. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
73-Goat Head – Red - Don’t miss this popular trail to the top. Goat Head is the name of the hill and also the name of the trail. The main entry for Goat Head trail is found on the west side of Goat Head (hill). As you climb up the first large granite wall you have 2 routes to the top. First option is to hang a hard right, then circle left until you see the climb up where you will shoot straight up the hill towards the top. Second option is to veer left and keep climbing. About halfway up the trail narrows with a large drop-off on the drivers side. Upon nearing the top you will come to a large granite wall that blocks the trail. It’s not as hard as it looks, and most people climb over, but there is a bypass if you need it. Once you are over that boulder you have arrived at the top of Goat Head. A nice place to pull over and take a break and enjoy the views. Five named trails all come together here at the top. Keep going east for the trip back down. (In case you are wondering, the 5 trails are Goat Head, Rat Trap, Death Valley, Majesty, and Heaven’s Gate). Wolf Caves designated red trail.
85-Wicked – Red - The main entry is up the wall on the south side. It’s up and then hard right. There is an entrance around on the NW corner, that provides a very hard route to the same exit point. Challenging either way. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
88-Howling Wolf – Red - It is a short jump up from here to the Wolf Caves formation. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
92-Taylor Trap – Red - Is a very popular trail that is not too hard and is fun to drive. The beginning drops off the Wolf Caves main road and runs in the creek over several obstacles. Upon reaching a fence line traveling a short distance more and then turning left around the side of a hill, once at the top there is a 10 foot high wall on your left that provides an alternate route for those who care to attempt it. Either way you will make a slight left turn crossing waves of granite and keep going all the way to the top which then drops back down to an unnamed trail. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
96-Dare Devil – Red - Climb up left of the sign, then hard right and down heading due south, go slightly left up the next wall and then on south with a hard right leading you into a huge drop down a wall of granite, back down to the main road. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
96-Whiskey Warrior – Red - Is most likely the most popular trail at Wolf Caves, so don’t miss it! Whiskey Warrior starts off very easy and traverses a range of challenges along the ½ mile trail. About halfway through your will crosse over the Wolf Caves formation. It can get difficult along the way but has plenty of places where you can bypass some of the more difficult obstacles if you need to and then catch up with your group on the other side. Whiskey Warrior keeps increasing in intensity the further down the trail you go and finally ending with a big drop off. Start the trail before noon if you can because the setting sun can become a factor. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
97-KFC – Red - Is a funny name, well there are several ways to climb this one. Practice your style here. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
98-Hole In The Wall – Red - Provides a steep route up and directly over an unusual hole in the wall of granite. At the top you will pass by Rock-It-Man and head back down. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
99-Rock-It-Man – Red - A great place to test your medal…..start off by crossing the mother of all boulder fields, then launch right on up to the top. Saturn V’s will go hard left and Bottle Rockets will veer right. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
100-Right Turn Clyde – Red - Climb on up and keep turning right, enter the squeeze and keep right. Glide back down to the main trail. Wolf Caves designated red trail.
